Accra, Ghana – Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang today delivered a powerful call to action to the newly elected National Executive of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), urging them to lead with professionalism, integrity, and a unified front in their crucial role of informing society. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony in Accra, where she represented President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President underscored journalism’s indispensable contribution to deepening Ghana’s democratic foundations.

In her remarks, Professor Opoku-Agyemang directly addressed the burgeoning challenge of misinformation and disinformation, particularly amplified by the rise of artificial intelligence, which she noted is often straining public trust. She implored the GJA to position itself as the “standard-bearer” for truth, serving as a reliable and authoritative source of information that actively supports national development and aids in the formulation of sound policy decisions.
Furthermore, the Vice President emphasized the enduring responsibility of legacy, encouraging the new GJA leadership to act in ways that will not only elevate the association’s standing but also empower individual journalists and make meaningful contributions to the future trajectory of Ghana’s evolving media landscape. Her address highlighted the government’s recognition of the media’s critical role and the need for a robust and ethical press in the nation’s progress.
