ACCRA, GHANA – The United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have reportedly affirmed their support for Ghana’s request to extradite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. Ofori-Atta is currently wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and is subject to an INTERPOL Red Notice.
Sources at the U.S. Embassy in Accra, as reported by myjoyonline.com, indicate that both U.S. agencies have assessed the legal proceedings against Ofori-Atta and concluded they are valid, not constituting political persecution. The U.S. Department of Justice and FBI reportedly found no grounds to support claims that the extradition request is a “witch-hunt.” While foreign nationals in the U.S. can seek protection under immigration law if they believe they are unfairly targeted by their home government, this avenue does not appear applicable in Ofori-Atta’s case.
Ken Ofori-Atta, believed to be in the United States, was re-declared wanted by the OSP on February 12, 2025, leading to the subsequent INTERPOL Red Notice.
