Every year on January 30, the world comes together to observe World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is calling on global leaders, communities, and individuals to unite, act, and eliminate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that affect over 1.5 billion people worldwide.

NTDs are a group of diseases that thrive in tropical and subtropical regions, where access to healthcare is limited. These diseases, such as dengue, leprosy, and river blindness, cause immense suffering, disability, and even death. They also perpetuate cycles of poverty, hindering socio-economic development and progress.

The WHO has set ambitious targets to control, eliminate, or eradicate NTDs by 2030, as outlined in their road map 2021−2030. The Kigali Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases, signed in 2022, further solidifies global commitments to tackling these diseases.

To achieve these goals, the WHO emphasizes the need for bold, sustainable investments in NTD control and elimination efforts. This includes increasing funding for research and development, strengthening healthcare systems, and promoting community engagement and participation.

As we observe World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, let us remember that everyone has a role to play in the fight against NTDs. We can all contribute by raising awareness, advocating for policy change, and supporting initiatives that work towards NTD elimination. Together, we can create a world where no one suffers from these debilitating diseases.
