The UNICEF Ghana Representative, Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, to commend the Ghanaian government for its commitment to child rights. Mr. Khogali lauded Ghana for being the first country to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1990, demonstrating the country’s dedication to protecting children’s welfare.
The Minister highlighted initiatives implemented by the Ministry to promote child rights and welfare. These include incorporating child rights policing into police training to equip law enforcement officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle child-related cases effectively. This initiative aims to ensure that children’s rights are protected and their welfare is prioritized in all interactions with law enforcement.
The Minister also mentioned plans to strengthen the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to enable it to provide more effective support to victims of child abuse and exploitation. Additionally, new police stations being built are designed with provisions for juvenile cells, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to protecting children’s rights. These initiatives underscore the government’s efforts to create a safe and supportive environment for children.
Mr. Khogali reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting the Ministry in promoting child rights and welfare. He expressed appreciation for the Minister’s efforts and assured him of continued collaboration to advance child welfare and protection in Ghana. The meeting highlighted the importance of partnerships in promoting the rights and welfare of children and the need for continued collaboration to achieve this goal.
