The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has expressed strong opposition to the proposed sale of 60% of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Agriculture.
The TUC in a statement issued in Accra on May 20, 2024, has warned that they will not allow the sale to proceed, citing concerns about the conflict of interest and the lack of transparency in the process.
This opposition according to the statement is likely due to concerns about the potential misuse of workers’ pension funds and the lack of accountability in the sale process. The TUC may be advocating for a more transparent and accountable process that prioritizes the interests of workers and pensioners.
The alleged sale has sparked criticism, with North Tongu MP Okudzeto Ablakwa filing a petition with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). SSNIT is nearing the completion of divesting 60% of its shares in Labadi Beach Hotel, LA Palm Royal Beach Resort, Ride Royal Hotel, and Elmina Beach Resort to Rock City Hotel.
