The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, paid a working visit to the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) to express the government’s commitment to supporting the shipping industry. During his visit, he also made a courtesy call on Prof. Ransford Edward Van Gyampo
Minister Nikpe assured the GSA that the government is dedicated to addressing concerns raised by shipping companies regarding Act 1122 of 2024. The law has been criticized for positioning the GSA as both a regulator and an asset manager, leading to bureaucratic challenges that increase the cost of doing business at the ports.
Some shipping companies have threatened to relocate from Ghana’s ports due to these challenges. Minister Nikpe emphasized the need to act quickly to create an environment that encourages shipping lines to stay.
He referenced President John Mahama’s pledge to reduce the cost of doing business at Ghana’s ports by revising existing laws. Minister Nikpe pledged to work closely with the GSA to streamline operations and eliminate bureaucratic hurdles that deter business.
“The threat of shipping lines relocating is real. We must act ahead of time to create an environment that encourages them to stay,” Minister Nikpe stated.
