Chicago, IL — July 18, 2025
A heartbreaking incident in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood has led to the death of a one-year-old boy and first-degree murder charges against his mother.
Authorities have charged Surah Amon, 31, following allegations that she drowned her infant son, Sir Watson, in Lake Michigan on Friday. Emergency responders were dispatched after a distress call, locating Amon in the water. The Chicago Fire Department’s Marine Unit recovered the child, who was later pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the child’s identity.
According to prosecutors, a family member had contacted 911 earlier that day, reporting concerns that Amon was experiencing a mental health crisis and had left home with her son, possibly heading toward the lake. Authorities say Amon later admitted to ending her child’s life and attempting suicide.
She remains hospitalized and in custody. A status hearing has been scheduled as part of her legal proceedings.
