As Ghana prepares to welcome its 9th Parliament, Professor Stephen Kweku Asare, a renowned expert in public law and justice, is urging lawmakers to prioritize seven critical constitutional and structural reforms. These reforms, Asare argues, are essential to addressing the deep-seated frustrations with the current governance system that were evident in the 2024 elections.

The seven key areas identified by Asare include Local Government Reform, aimed at strengthening decentralization and community participation; Legal Education Overhaul, to improve the quality and relevance of legal education in Ghana; Judicial Reform, focused on enhancing the independence, efficiency, and accountability of the judiciary; Comprehensive Code of Conduct for Public Officials, to promote transparency, integrity, and accountability in public office; Financial Management Reform, designed to improve budgeting, procurement, and financial reporting practices; Campaign Finance Regulation, to reduce the influence of money in politics and promote fair competition; and Anti-Corruption Measures, to strengthen institutions and mechanisms for preventing, detecting, and prosecuting corruption.

Asare’s call to action is timely, given the significant shift in the political landscape following the 2024 elections. With a new parliament poised to take office, there is a unique opportunity to implement meaningful reforms that will strengthen Ghana’s democracy, promote good governance, and improve the lives of citizens.
