The Tale We Tell With Our Lives

“We spend our years as a tale that is told.” —Psalm 90:9

Every life is a story unfolding, a tale written in the book of time. Some stories are brief, their chapters few, while others stretch across many seasons. Yet length alone does not determine a life’s worth—rather, it is the content within each moment, the depth of purpose, and the meaning we weave into our years that give a life its true measure.

Just as some stories are dull while others captivate, human lives follow the same pattern. Some spend their days in selfish pursuits, chasing fleeting pleasures, while others embrace challenges with courage and perseverance. There are those whose lives bring harm—spreading sorrow like an affliction—and those whose presence heals like a soothing balm, offering hope and comfort to weary souls.

The choices we make shape the tale we leave behind. A life marked by cruelty and selfishness casts a long shadow, affecting not only the one who lived it but also the generations that follow. In contrast, a life devoted to goodness and service shines like a beacon, inspiring and uplifting others. The world listens eagerly to tales of love, sacrifice, and faith, for they carry the essence of divine purpose.

At the center of this unfolding narrative must be Christ. He alone can fill the pages of our lives with eternal significance. To live without Him is to drift aimlessly, but to make Him the foundation of our existence is to write a story of victory, redemption, and glory. If Christ is the author of our days, if He is the hero of our journey, then our tale will resonate beyond time and be cherished by generations to come.

The graves of the righteous bloom with fresh flowers year after year, their memory honored by those who remain. The legacy of a life lived for self, however, withers into obscurity, its name forgotten and its deeds condemned. But a life poured out in service to God and humanity will be a living testimony, a tale worth telling—one that echoes through eternity.

Let us then strive to craft a story worth hearing, a legacy worth passing on. May our days be filled with purpose, and may our years declare the goodness of the Lord.
