Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, has identified “The Next Meal” as the greatest threat to Africa’s democracy. He made this statement during a discussion on democracy, governance, and political integrity in Nigeria.
According to Dr. Bawumia, when people’s primary concern is their next meal, democracy becomes a secondary concern. He emphasized that democracy must deliver tangible benefits, such as access to essential public goods and services, opportunities for economic advancement, and a fair society for all citizens.
Dr. Bawumia also quoted Nelson Mandela, saying, “As long as poverty, injustice, and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” He urged Africans to prioritize democracy and work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
