Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the Minority and Speaker Alban Bagbin to respect the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on four parliamentary seats previously declared vacant. The Speaker had declared the seats of four MPs vacant, sparking a heated debate. Afenyo-Markin petitioned the Supreme Court, emphasizing the NPP’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully.

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, ruled in Afenyo-Markin’s favor, overturning the Speaker’s decision. Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of respecting democratic principles, mutual respect, and the rule of law. He encouraged all parties to align with these values for parliamentary stability and integrity.

“Democracy requires decency… We expect our colleagues and the Speaker to respect the court’s decision. Ghana shines in the eyes of Africans, and we must hold that dearly.” Afenyo-Markin urged peaceful resolution, saying, “All we want is peace in the country, and that’s what we chose and got.”
