The Parliament’s Assurances Committee held a public hearing on the galamsey crisis, with Minerals Commission CEO Martin Ayisi in attendance. North Tongu MP Okudzeto Ablakwa presented samples from 13 polluted rivers and streams, highlighting the devastating impact of irresponsible mining.

The committee urged Ayisi to reconsider the Commission’s stance on small-scale mining, amid widespread calls for a ban. Ayisi cited lack of support from security services, citing unacted-upon reports of illegal mining, including behind the Anyinam Police Station.

The CEO pledged to investigate issues raised, including MMDCEs obtaining mining licenses. Further public hearings are scheduled, with the committee set to present a comprehensive report.

Ghanaians await concrete action to address this environmental threat.
