Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, has called on lawyers and judges to lead the fight against illegal mining, describing it as an “ecological injustice.” Speaking at a church service marking the Judiciary’s 67th Legal Year, Dr. Boafo emphasized that environmental harm in Ghana results from human actions.
He stressed that damage to forests, rivers, and ecosystems should concern everyone, including the Judiciary. Dr. Boafo noted that those in power encourage and recruit youth to engage in environmental destruction for gold, highlighting the dire consequences of illegal mining, including health issues and water contamination.
