Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to a peaceful election in Ghana, with barely 60 days left before the polls. Mahama’s call comes after a meeting with the West African Elders Forum, led by President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday.
The West African Elders Forum has been working tirelessly since 2020 to prevent conflict arising from elections in the subregion. Mr. Mahama praised the initiative, citing his experience leading the Forum’s mission to the recent Nigerian election. “Their presence in Ghana is very timely and crucial,” he emphasized.
Mr. Mahama stressed that a peaceful election relies on thorough groundwork and preparation. “If we get everything right in the lead-up, the election will be peaceful and successful,” he noted. He reaffirmed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) unwavering commitment to a peaceful election.
Mr. Mahama also highlighted the importance of cooperation among stakeholders, particularly with the Electoral Commission (EC), which he described as the “neutral arbiter and umpire.” He expressed optimism that, with collective effort, Ghana can achieve a successful and peaceful election.
The West African Elders Forum’s involvement underscores the region’s commitment to promoting peace and stability. As Ghana prepares for its upcoming election, Mahama’s call for cooperation and peaceful conduct resonates with the nation’s desire for a smooth democratic process.
