The Ministry of Health has joined forces with Bayer Pharmaceuticals and the German Development Cooperation (GiZ) to organize a national prostate cancer dialogue. The event, themed “Bridging the Gap in Prostate Cancer Care,” aims to intensify education efforts, dispel myths, and provide accurate information about risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of early screening.

Globally, prostate cancer cases are alarming, with 1,467,854 new cases recorded in 2022, making it the fourth most common cancer worldwide. In Ghana, it’s one of the top two reported cancers affecting men, particularly those aged 40 and above.

Adelaide Ntim, Deputy Minister for Health, emphasized the need for enhanced education efforts to address the challenges surrounding prostate cancer. She commended the partners for initiating the “Piloting Prostate Cancer Intervention” project in Accra, designed to raise awareness, promote early detection, and develop strategic policy recommendations.

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has expanded its benefit package to include wellness services, childhood cancers, and prostate cancer. Additionally, the NHIA has introduced an annual adult screening program, providing opportunities for adults to be screened during their birth months.

To enhance diagnostic capabilities, eight health facilities have been equipped with Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing devices, and lab technicians have been trained for accurate testing.

Dr. Dirus Osei, Technical Advisor to the Health Minister, stressed that tackling prostate cancer is crucial for achieving Ghana’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) strategy and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals by 2030. By addressing risk factors and improving public health awareness, Ghana can significantly reduce the burden of prostate cancer and improve health outcomes for men.

The national dialogue brought together policymakers, health experts, development partners, and civil society organizations to discuss key issues, including data-driven decision-making and awareness creation. This collaborative effort demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to combating prostate cancer and ensuring better health outcomes for its citizens.
