This year’s Father’s Day celebration at The Church Of The Ghanaian Community of Chicago transcended all expectations, becoming a truly unforgettable and pioneering event. For the first time in its history, the sacred pulpit was graced by the insightful voice of youth, marking a powerful departure from tradition. This momentous occasion also beautifully coincided with the joyous 60th birthday of their beloved Resident pastor, Reverend Emmanuel Betson, weaving together threads of profound wisdom and heartfelt celebration.
The afternoon began with an electrifying sermon delivered by young Brother Kofi Bugyei, who captivated the congregation from his very first words. With disarming honesty, Kofi openly pondered the unusual nature of his role that day, acknowledging his own youth and lack of personal fatherhood experience. Yet, with maturity far beyond his years, he beautifully concluded that this was, in fact, “an unparalleled opportunity to explore the true essence of fatherhood, not from the perspective of a father, but through the pure, unvarnished eyes of a son!”
Kofi’s message resonated deeply, painting fatherhood as a sacred, reciprocal journey between parent and child. He passionately articulated the child’s vital role in honoring and heeding their father’s wisdom, while simultaneously emphasizing the father’s profound responsibility to nurture, guide, oversee, and perpetuate a lasting legacy. Quoting from Ephesians 6:1-4, Kofi masterfully underscored the divine imperative for children to cherish and respect their parents, urging fathers to be an unwavering, constant presence in their children’s lives.
He stressed that fathers are not just providers but essential spiritual mentors, guiding their offspring along life’s righteous path. With heartfelt sincerity, he declared that having a child is not merely a responsibility but a divine privilege, for children are precious gifts from God himself. A twinkle in his eye, Kofi shared his personal yearning to one day embrace fatherhood, envisioning himself lovingly guiding his own child through school and life’s many lessons. He concluded his powerful preaching by emphasizing the indispensable role of discipline in a child’s development, yet he stressed that the bedrock of all parenting, its very foundation, must always be unconditional, unwavering love and boundless acceptance.
Following Kofi’s inspiring words, the women’s ministry , radiating warmth and appreciation, presented thoughtful token gifts to every man and boy in attendance, a beautiful expression of collective love and gratitude. The atmosphere in the church was electric as the Men’s Ministry took charge, leading the congregation in a fervent and soul-stirring session of praise and worship songs. Their voices, powerful and unified, filled the sanctuary with undeniable energy, lifting every spirit present.
As the service drew to a close, the significance of the day became unmistakably clear—it was not just a celebration, but a transformation. This was a day where generations connected, where wisdom was passed from son to father, and where a young voice boldly declared that the legacy of fatherhood is eternal.
And as the final note of worship faded into the heavens, one undeniable truth remained: the greatest gift a father can bestow is not wealth, nor stature, but a legacy of love—enduring, unconditional, and divinely inspired.
This was a Father’s Day like never before—one that would not merely be remembered, but carried forward, shaping lives for years to come.
