Sankofa: Azumah Nelson’s Historic Fight Which Gave Ghana Its Second World Title In Boxing.

Amazon Store

On this Day in Dec 1982, which is exactly 38 years ago, Azumah Nelson defeated Puerto Rican Wilfredo Gómez to win the WBC featherweight title in Puerto Rico. It was Ghana’s second world title in boxing, after D.K Poison in 1975. What turned out to be the most remarkable career, Nelson started his amateur competition at the 1978 All-Africa Games and 1978 Commonwealth Games, winning gold medals in the featherweight class at both events. He was awarded Amateur Boxer of the year by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) that same year. Despite all his early achievements and being undefeated in 13 fights, Nelson was virtually unknown outside Ghana. Because of this, he was a decisive underdog when, on short notice, he challenged WBC featherweight champion, Salvador Sánchez, on 21 July 1982 at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Nelson lost the fight by fifteenth-round knockout.
