Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu, has sounded a warning bell about the dire need to regulate campaign financing in Ghana’s political landscape. Speaking at a dialogue on National Elections in Ghana, he expressed his deep concerns about the alarming levels of political monetisation that have become the norm in the country.

According to Mr. Manu, the unchecked flow of money in politics is eroding the very foundations of democracy, creating an uneven playing field that prevents competent individuals from contesting in elections. He lamented that the exorbitant costs of political campaigns have made it impossible for capable candidates without deep pockets to participate, thereby undermining the principles of true democracy.

Mr. Manu emphasized that the lack of regulation in campaign financing has led to a situation where political parties and candidates are forced to rely on a small group of wealthy donors, compromising their independence and accountability to the people. He stressed that this trend not only perpetuates corruption but also undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

The former NPP chairman urged policymakers and stakeholders to take immediate action to establish a robust regulatory framework that promotes transparency, accountability, and equal opportunities for all political players. By doing so, Ghana can ensure that its democracy remains vibrant, inclusive, and truly representative of the people’s will.
