On this significant day in Ghana’s history, August 4, 1974, our nation made a remarkable transition – we switched from driving on the left side of the road to the right. Under the leadership of General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, ‘Operation Keep Right’ was successfully implemented, defying initial fears and ensuring accident-free roads. Let us reflect on this pivotal moment and celebrate the progress we’ve made since then.
The Decision and Implementation
Under the leadership of General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong’s National Redemption Council (NRC), Ghana embarked on a significant road safety initiative. On that historic day in 1974, Ghana switched from driving on the left side of the road to the right side. This decision was part of a sustained large-scale campaign called “Operation Keep Right.”
The Challenge and Success
Many Ghanaians initially feared that this change would lead to chaos and accidents. However, with effective education, television programs, and radio messages constantly reminding citizens (“Pipi-piipi, Enyinfa-enyinfa, naanyin”), the country successfully made the transition without any casualties. It was a remarkable achievement, considering the potential risks associated with such a significant shift.
Reflection and Progress
As we commemorate this event, it’s essential to reflect on its impact. How far have we come since that pivotal day? Has the change significantly reduced road accidents? While I don’t have real-time data, it’s clear that Ghanaian leaders demonstrated their commitment to improving road safety. However, continuous efforts are necessary to maintain and enhance these gains.
Moving Forward
For Ghana to develop further, our politicians must embrace challenges and prioritize the well-being of the people. Let’s celebrate this milestone and use it as a reminder that positive change is possible when we work together.
Happy Founders’ Day on August 4! Let’s continue striving for safer roads and a brighter future.
