Accra, Ghana – Following a torrential downpour on Monday morning, the capital city of Accra experienced yet another flood. The heavy rains led to severe road congestion, leaving numerous corporate workers, traders, students, and motorists stranded and soaked. Areas like Pokuase, Achimota, Odawna, Tesano, and Alajo were significantly affected, with motorists forced to pull over along the roadside, seeking refuge from the relentless rain.
While there were no reported fatalities this time, the property damage was significant. Roads were submerged at Abossey Okine and Kaneshie markets, hindering movement and commerce. In other locations, the roofs of buildings were ripped off by strong winds, landing on cars and causing further property damage. The situation highlights the urgent need for better drainage systems and advanced waste management practices in Accra.
Unfortunately, this flooding is not an isolated incident. Accra has become accustomed to being submerged in floodwaters, even after the slightest drizzle of rain. Many residents have taken advantage of the situation to dispose of their garbage into the floodwaters, exacerbating the problem. The drainage systems in most parts of Accra are blocked with plastics, wrappers, and cans, overflowing with junk and posing a potential health hazard.
As the rainy season continues, authorities must prioritize safety and immediately address the recurring flooding. Clearing choked drains, enhancing waste disposal practices, and investing in durable infrastructure are necessary steps to alleviate the impact of heavy rains on Accra’s residents and property owners.
Remember, safety should always come first during such weather events. Stay updated about local advisories and take essential safety measures to safeguard yourself and your property if you’re in an affected area.
