President John Dramani Mahama made a historic visit to Ghana’s Chancery in Nairobi, Kenya, on Sunday, becoming the first President to set foot in the newly renovated facility. The Chancery, which was acquired by Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has undergone significant transformations since its initial construction.
After being closed down in 1980, the Government of Ghana returned to the property in 2008 and embarked on a reconstruction project. The renovation included the construction of a new residence for the Head of Mission and the modernization of existing structures. The staff of the High Commission moved into the newly built facility between May and April 2024.
During his visit, President Mahama was received by Mr. Damptey Bediako Asare, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, who conducted him around the facility. The President expressed his joy at the new facility and thanked the staff for their dedication to duty.
President Mahama’s visit to the Chancery was part of his participation in the special meeting of the African Union’s (AU) Heads of State and Governments in Nairobi, Kenya, which opened on Monday, January 27. He was accompanied by Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesman to the President, and Mr. Stanisluv Xoese Dogbe, the Deputy Chief of Staff in-charge of Operations at the Presidency.
