Accra, Ghana – Germany’s Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has successfully concluded his significant three-day state visit to Ghana, with the Ghanaian government and President John Dramani Mahama expressing gratitude and vowing to expedite the implementation of all committed projects.

The visit, described as “memorable,” served to reaffirm and deepen the “inseparable” bilateral friendship between Ghana and Germany.

The farewell message from the Presidency underscored the wide-ranging significance of the trip, noting that its impact extended beyond official circles.

The statement highlighted the diverse group of people who would “always cherish” the visit, including President Mahama, key Government officials, the Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, Ghanaian business leaders, and notably, the “talented young people” with whom President Steinmeier exhibited his football skills. This engagement with youth and traditional authority signals the broad diplomatic and cultural success of the mission.

Commitment to Project Implementation

The core focus now shifts from diplomacy to execution. The Ghanaian government has pledged to “work even harder and diligently to implement all the projects and initiatives” committed to by both countries.

These initiatives, discussed during extensive meetings between the two presidents, heavily focus on sectors critical to Ghana’s development, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), renewable energy and climate action, and boosting German Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in sectors like agribusiness and digital services. Germany’s commitment of €65 million and the sod-cutting for the €5 million Centre of Excellence for Green Technology in Kumasi are central to this implementation phase.

Consolidating Ghana’s Regional Role

President Steinmeier’s visit has cemented Ghana’s position as Germany’s most valued partner in sub-Saharan Africa. The relationship serves not only Ghana’s development goals but also Germany’s wider interests in regional stability, democratic governance, and trade access to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The successful conclusion of the visit sets a strong precedent for future collaboration, with Ghana committed to remaining a stable, reliable, and strategic gateway for German businesses seeking to expand their footprint across West Africa. The two nations are expected to maintain close consultation to ensure the tangible delivery of the promised cooperation.
