President Mahama Swears In New Police Council, Urges Reforms and Professionalism

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama today, June 10, 2025, swore in the Chairperson and members of the Police Council at a ceremony held at Jubilee House. In his address, President Mahama tasked the newly constituted Council to prioritize reforms within the Ghana Police Service, focusing on the welfare of personnel, addressing promotion delays, and resolving grievances.

He further urged the Council to enhance professionalism, align the Service with the government’s agenda, and build trust both internally and with the public through a people-centered policing approach rooted in community partnerships, dialogue, accessibility, and empathy.

The President commended the Police Service for recent successes in major criminal cases, including the rescue of two kidnapped Nigerian women, arrests in the murder of mobile money merchants, and the apprehension of suspects in the Asiyaw murder case involving five victims. He pledged the government’s full support to the Council and the Police Service, including logistical aid to improve service delivery and operational efficiency.

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who chairs the Council, expressed gratitude to the President for the trust placed in them. She affirmed the Council’s commitment to ensuring an empowered, well-trained, and accountable Police Service, urging members to work unitedly towards a safer, fairer, and more just Ghana.

The newly sworn-in Police Council comprises H.E. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang (Chairperson), Hon. Mutaka Mohammed Mubarak (Minister for the Interior), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno (Inspector-General of Police), Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine (Minister for Justice), Mr. Daniel Owusu Nyampong, Esq. (Ghana Bar Association Representative), COP/Nathan Kofi Boakye (Rtd.) (Retired Senior Police Officers Association Representative), DCOP/Lydia Yaako Donkor (Senior Police Officers Representative), Chief Inspector Angel Lolo, Esq. (Junior Police Officers Representative), and presidential appointees COP/Ms. Rose Bio Atinga (Rtd.) and Mr. Benson Tonga Baba.
