ACCRA – President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the critical role of massive infrastructure investment in unlocking the full potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement. During a meeting with AfCFTA Secretary General Wamkele Mene, Mahama reiterated that robust transportation networks, including roads and rail, and seamless digital connectivity are the “arteries of trade” crucial for the continent’s economic advancement.

President Mahama warned that poor connections and links across Africa would continue to impede the exchange of goods and services, thereby hindering progress. He referenced the AU-NEPAD vision, advocating for proactive steps to open up African economies.

The president highlighted the transformative impact of investing in vital corridors, citing the potential of extending the Abidjan-Lagos route to Dakar to create a seamless channel for trade and significantly boost intra-African commerce. He also affirmed Ghana’s pride in hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to facilitating its work.
