President John Dramani Mahama has launched the One Million Coders Programme, a national digital skills initiative aimed at training one million Ghanaians in coding, cybersecurity, data analytics, and related fields over the next four years. The programme, launched on April 16, 2025, in Accra, is part of President Mahama’s Reset Ghana agenda to prepare the country for a more competitive role in the global digital economy.

The programme has already received an overwhelming response, with over 90,000 applications received within 48 hours of its announcement. A first cohort of 560 trainees has begun training in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga. The programme is designed to be inclusive, targeting people from all backgrounds, including women, rural dwellers, and persons with disabilities.

According to President Mahama, the initiative will not only address unemployment but also open up opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. He emphasized that the programme is about changing the national narrative from being users of imported technology to creators of their own. The government plans to set up training centres in all 261 districts through existing community information centers.

The Minister for Communications, Digital Innovation, and Technologies, Samuel Nartey George, highlighted the importance of the initiative in shaping Ghana’s digital future. He emphasized that the programme is a call to action to transform the economy, create jobs, and invest in the country’s people.
