Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama, recently re-elected for a non-consecutive second term, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, particularly outlining a series of key infrastructure projects for the Ashanti Region.
This pledge came during a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who used the occasion to call for integrity and national prioritization from President Mahama’s appointees.
The Asantehene urged the President’s team to uphold loyalty, truthfulness, and dedication to national development, stressing the importance of avoiding complacency and focusing diligently on their responsibilities. He emphasized that Ghana’s progress hinges on the collective efforts of its leaders, calling for a firm commitment to putting the nation first.
In response, President Mahama expressed gratitude to the Asantehene, revealing the monarch’s pivotal role in convincing him to accept the running mate position with the late President Prof. John Atta Mills, a decision he made after contemplating leaving politics. Mahama recounted receiving a call stating, “Otumfuo wants you in Manhyia,” which ultimately persuaded him to join the ticket.
He lauded the Ashanti king as a “national icon of peace and visionary leadership,” acknowledging Otumfuo’s significant contributions to resolving chieftaincy disputes and fostering peace.
President Mahama then outlined his administration’s prioritized projects for the Ashanti Region, particularly in and around Kumasi. These include the completion of the stalled Maternity and Children’s Block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), a critical health initiative for the northern sector. His government also plans to complete the Accra–Kumasi Highway to ease transport, expand the Kumasi International Airport to enhance connectivity, deliver the Kumasi City Traffic Programme to improve urban mobility, and construct two military hospitals in the region to boost healthcare and military readiness.
This meeting builds on previous engagements between the two leaders, which have focused on regional development and welfare.
Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who recently returned from medical leave, was also present at the gathering.
