Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has intervened in the ongoing issue concerning several radio stations, directing the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation to engage with the National Communications Authority (NCA) for the immediate restoration of broadcast for sixty-four affected stations. The directive comes as a move to balance regulatory compliance with the imperative of media freedom in the country.
According to a statement from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, and Spokesperson to the President, President Mahama holds the view that regulatory actions must inherently consider the importance of upholding and enhancing media freedom. He expressed concern that compelling radio stations to cease operations while they work to regularize their authorizations could inadvertently restrict the space for free expression.
In light of this, the President has specifically instructed the Minister to collaborate with the NCA. Their joint task will be to establish a practical and reasonable timeframe within which the affected radio stations can complete the necessary steps to regularize their broadcasting authorizations, ensuring continued operation without undue disruption.
