President-Elect John Mahama has announced plans to return the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana. This move is aimed at restoring the hospital’s original purpose, as envisioned by the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

The UGMC has been at the center of a management controversy since its completion in November 2016. The facility was intended to be a world-class medical center, providing specialized healthcare services and serving as a teaching hospital for the University of Ghana’s medical school.

However, disagreements over the management of the facility led to a stalemate, with the Ministry of Health and the University of Ghana both claiming ownership and management rights. This impasse has prevented the hospital from operating at full capacity, despite being fully equipped and staffed.

Mahama’s decision to return the management of the UGMC to the University of Ghana is seen as a major step towards resolving the impasse and restoring the hospital’s original purpose. The move is expected to enable the hospital to operate effectively, providing much-needed healthcare services to Ghanaians.

With this development, Ghanaians can look forward to a fully functional UGMC, providing specialized healthcare services and serving as a center of excellence for medical education and research.
