A tense situation unfolded in Notroso, Ahafo Region, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, when some individuals attempted to breach security at the Newmont mining site to allegedly steal gold. The Ghana Police Service swiftly intervened, restoring calm in the area.

During the operation to contain the situation, police confronted the suspects, resulting in the deaths of three persons and injuries to four others. The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, played a crucial role in stabilizing the situation by engaging with community leaders and youth throughout the night.
A special investigation team from Accra has been deployed to the area to investigate the incident, while a reinforcement team is working to maintain peace, security, law, and order in the community. The police have also confirmed that the three deceased victims are Muslims and are following due process to release their bodies to their families for burial.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by mining communities in Ghana. In the past, there have been reports of clashes between mining companies and local communities, resulting in fatalities and injuries. For instance, in 2022, a shooting incident at Ahafo Kenyasi resulted in one death and four injuries.
The police have urged the public to remain calm as they work to ensure law and order prevail in the area.
