In a passionate plea, workers at the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are urging the outgoing government to fast-track the passage of the Environmental Protection Bill 2024 into law. Godsway Lawson Daniels, Divisional Chairman of the Public Service Workers Union, emphasized the importance of passing the bill before the current Parliament’s term ends.
According to Daniels, the bill has reached its final stage, and failing to pass it now would be a significant disservice to the state and the environment. He appealed to the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mr. Afenyo, to ensure the bill’s passage during the life of the 8th Parliament.
The Environmental Protection Bill 2024 aims to provide a comprehensive legal framework for addressing environmental protection issues in Ghana. It consolidates various environmental acts, establishes the Environmental Protection Authority, and introduces a Pesticides Management Fund.
With the bill’s third reading scheduled for early January 2025, Daniels urged the minority side of the house to support its passage. The fate of the Environmental Protection Bill 2024 hangs in the balance, and its passage is crucial for Ghana’s environmental future.
