Accra, Ghana – The 2nd edition of the Democracy Cup was officially launched today by the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. The tournament, set for Friday, August 29, will feature a highly anticipated match between city rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, promising an exciting display of local football prowess.
The event will not only showcase professional football but also foster camaraderie among key national institutions. Before the main clash, a curtain-raiser match will see Members of Parliament take to the field against representatives from the Judiciary, underscoring the collaborative spirit intended by the cup’s organizers.
Parliament’s overarching goal for the Democracy Cup is to leverage the universal appeal of football as a unifying force. This initiative is designed to promote and strengthen Ghana’s democratic principles, encouraging national cohesion and civic engagement through the shared passion for the sport.
The Democracy Cup was first introduced in 2024 as a parliamentary initiative specifically aimed at promoting democratic values, national unity, and peaceful coexistence through sports. The inaugural edition saw a high-profile encounter between Ghanaian football giants Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, with Asante Kotoko ultimately emerging victorious as the champions.
