Accra, Ghana – In a direct appeal to the nation’s media, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, has called for a deeper appreciation and more extensive reporting on Parliament’s vital role in societal development and the entrenchment of democratic rights. His remarks were made during the opening ceremony of a two-day capacity building workshop for members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) in Accra, a critical forum aimed at enhancing media understanding of parliamentary functions.
Mr. Djietror underscored that parliamentary actions, such as the recent passage of the Public Order Act, the Private Members’ Bill, and the Private Bill, are not mere legislative formalities but significant enactments that directly deepen the democratic rights and freedoms of the Ghanaian populace. He challenged journalists to leverage their considerable platforms to “amplify and educate the public on the good works of Members of Parliament,” thereby fostering greater public understanding and engagement with the legislative process.
The workshop, meticulously organized by Parliament’s Media Relations Department, brought together renowned facilitators to guide participants through a range of pertinent topics. Sessions included insightful perspectives on “Enhancing the image of Parliament through the media-Perspective of the Minority and Majority Caucuses,” presented by Samuel Awuku, MP for Akuapem North, and Frank Afriyie, MP for Afadjato South, respectively.
Further deepening the journalists’ understanding of parliamentary mechanics, Mr. Camilo Pwamang, Deputy Clerk to Parliament (LMS), delivered a comprehensive presentation on “The Rules Governing Parliamentary Business and Operations – What the Media Need to Know.”
The event saw the presence of other key parliamentary officials, including Deputy Clerk (IMS) Dr. Gloria Sarku Kumawu, Coordinating Director (Public Affairs Sub-Division) Mad. Kate Addo, along with various Directors of Departments, and Mr. Simon Agianab, the Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, all underscoring the collaborative effort to bridge the gap between legislative activities and public awareness.
