ACCRA, Ghana – The Parliament of Ghana is embarking on a new support initiative in collaboration with the World Bank and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to enhance the legislative capacity of Members of Parliament (MPs) and their staff. The project, titled “Building the Capacity of Parliamentarians for Economic and Financial Governance,” aims to improve legislative efficiency and oversight in the West African nation.
Officials from the World Bank and FCDO introduced the initiative during a briefing session, underscoring the importance of continuous development in parliamentary procedures and strengthening MPs’ comprehension of legislative processes for accountability and informed decision-making.
Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, expressed his welcome for the project, highlighting its potential to broaden Parliament’s engagement with development partners and bolster its ability to fulfill constitutional mandates. He emphasized that a re-equipped Parliament would be better positioned to execute both its legislative and oversight responsibilities.
Both the Deputy Majority Leader, Kwaku Ricketts-Hagan, and Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, lauded the support from the World Bank and FCDO, describing the initiative as both timely and impactful.
In his concluding remarks, Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, observed that the current Parliament is composed of highly educated members who lead crucial committees. He urged committee leaders to take full ownership of the project to ensure its effective implementation and strengthen Parliament’s overall performance.
The official launch of the project is scheduled for June 18, 2025, at Parliament House, and will be led by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S. K. Bagbin.
