Tamale, Ghana – Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has called for strategic unity and collaboration among leaders and stakeholders in Northern Ghana to unlock the region’s full development potential. Speaking at the inaugural Northern Development Conference, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the area’s rich cultural diversity as a key strength and emphasized its crucial role as Ghana’s “breadbasket,” contributing over 40% of the nation’s agricultural produce. He advocated for increased investment in modern farming, agro-processing, tourism, renewable energy, and other sectors to foster sustainable growth and job creation.
Afenyo-Markin specifically lauded the recent inauguration of the Northern Caucus in Parliament, led by Speaker Alban Bagbin. This caucus, uniting Members of Parliament from all five northern regions across political divides, represents a collective voice dedicated to advocating for region-specific development initiatives. The Minority Leader stressed that this coalition is essential for consolidating the North’s political representation and ensuring that priorities such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment are effectively championed in national policy and budget allocations.
He candidly addressed the persistent challenges facing Northern Ghana, including high poverty rates, reaching up to 80% in some areas, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to electricity and clean water, and low educational attainment. Insecurity stemming from chieftaincy disputes, ethnic conflicts, and climate-related tensions were also identified as significant impediments to progress. While acknowledging the historical marginalization of the region due to these intertwined issues, Afenyo-Markin expressed optimism that coordinated action, strong leadership, and partnerships can overcome these stagnations.
In a compelling call to action, Afenyo-Markin urged traditional leaders, youth, politicians, development partners, and investors to unite for concrete initiatives and sustained efforts. He stressed that transparent and accountable governance, coupled with strategic investments in agriculture, health, education, and entrepreneurship, are vital for transformational progress. He concluded by expressing hope that collective resolve can transform Northern Ghana into a beacon of prosperity, peace, and inclusive growth, ultimately contributing to a stronger and more united Ghana.
