The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is not up for sale, according to Energy Minister John Jinapor. The Minister debunked claims that the government intends to sell the nation’s power distributor, emphasizing instead that the goal is to involve the private sector in its management.

President John Dramani Mahama had hinted at privatizing ECG to address inefficiencies in the power distribution system, but some opposition members and sections of the public misconstrued this as a plan to sell off the company. Minister Jinapor clarified that the government wants to ensure private sector involvement while emphasizing local participation, transparency, and responsibility.

A seven-member technical committee has been inaugurated to develop a comprehensive privatization plan for ECG, focusing on transparency and inclusivity. The committee has been tasked with consulting all stakeholders, including workers, staff, unions, consumers, and other relevant parties, and completing the exercise within one month.

Minister Jinapor stressed that the energy sector is struggling and needs urgent reform to prevent collapse. The government’s plan is to turn the sector around through a competitive and transparent process, ensuring that ECG is reformed to provide efficient and effective service delivery.
