The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, commemorating his life as one marked by bold leadership, sharp intellect, and unwavering pursuit of equity.

His leadership journey began during his tenure as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), where he fearlessly challenged the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over delayed GETFund disbursements. He escalated the issue to then-Minority Leader Alban Bagbin and pursued redress with tenacity, earning a reputation as a persistent advocate who stood firm in the face of political adversity.

His alignment with the NDC deepened as he collaborated with Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Bernard Mornah to strengthen the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), amplifying its role as a grassroots movement. He was among the courageous youth who personally supervised ballot printing processes to safeguard electoral transparency. Alongside fellow activists, he regularly convened at President Mills’ office at Kuku Hill, where they crafted strategic plans and envisioned the party’s trajectory.

Dr. Boamah’s contributions to national development were reflected in his various ministerial appointments. Between 2009 and 2012, he served as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology under President John Evans Atta Mills. Under President John Dramani Mahama’s first term from 2013 to 2016, he held the dual roles of Minister for Communication and Presidential Spokesperson, executing both with precision and professionalism. After Mahama’s re-election, Dr. Boamah was named Minister for Defence, a position he fulfilled with dignity until his untimely death on August 6, 2025, during a tragic helicopter accident in the Ashanti Region.

As Director of Elections, he revolutionized the party’s campaign operations, overseeing the training of polling agents and election oversight with meticulous attention. His strategic coordination and resource mobilization fortified the NDC’s grassroots machinery, while his vigilant monitoring of the Electoral Commission ensured accountability. The party remembers him as a visionary tactician, a fearless defender of democratic values, and a compassionate leader whose generosity touched many lives. His rare combination of brilliance, empathy, and resilience made him an irreplaceable asset to both the NDC and the Republic of Ghana.
