The tradition of celebrating birthdays is common among all people the world over. Indeed, Birthdays symbolize a sign of Life and growth. Therefore, Ghanaians are no exception in celebrating their birthdays, especially the Ghanaian community in Chicago. It is a city known for partying almost every weekend throughout the year. Most Ghanaian immigrants abroad indeed regard Chicago as the “party capital.” The title is befitting when considering the following celebrations in the Chicago metropolis. These are celebrating Life, christening, birthdays, and festivals such as the spectacular Ghanafest and Ghana’s independence celebrations. This time, the spotlight was on two heavyweights in the Ghanaian community. They are Nii Okine, who once deputized as Ga-Mantse at Ghanafest, and the legendary emcee, Nana Yaw Marfo. They were celebrating their birthdays which occurred on March 24, 2023.

Both celebrants have more than just a birthday to celebrate. Nii miraculously recovered from a life-threatening health condition last December while Nana Yaw Marfo was ready to introduce his Life’s love, Nana Abena Animah Adepa, to his friends and family. These two life-transforming experiences are a cause to celebrate in a grand style. As expected, the venue could hardly accommodate the guests. DJ Teddy was unusually prompt. He dished out lovely songs to entertain the revelers. The immediate past President of the GNC, Paa Kwasi Sam, used the occasion to present a portrait of Nii Okine and his lovely wife, Evelyn Afriyie to the family. He advised community members to celebrate their lives when he said, “Life is short, tomorrow is not guaranteed, celebrate your Life yearly. It doesn’t matter if it is 45, 31, or 50.”
