Members of the Church of Ghanaian Community of Chicago, COGCC, overwhelmingly voted to affirm Nana Kwaku Duah and Sister Sally Owusu as elders of the Church yesterday, October 24, 2021. Elder Nana Kwaku Duah and Elder Sally Owusu thus join Betty Agyeman, Susan Bamfo, Joe Danso, and Adu Darkwa as Elders of the Church. In Christianity, an elder is a person valued for wisdom and holds a position of responsibility and authority in a Christian group. In non-Christian world cultures, the term elder refers to age and experience, and the Christian sense of elder is partly related to this.

Members of the Church Council proposed the new elders about a month ago. Elders Nana Kwaku Duah and Sally Owusu are undergoing church leadership training sessions led by Reverend Dzifanu Agbenya, currently assigned by the Ghana Council of Churches in Chicago, to assist the COGCC with Pastoral duties.
Both newly elected elders have served the COGCC in many capacities. Elder Duah was a former Vice President and Chairman of a previous immigration Committee for the Church. Elder Sally Owusu was a treasurer for many years. They both served the Church diligently. Elders of the COGCC must be active members and serve as advisers to the Church Council.

Meanwhile, congratulatory messages have started pouring in for the two newly elected elders on the Church’s WhatsApp platform.

The President of the Church, Sister Evelyn Tetteh wrote “ On behalf of the executives and the entire membership, we congratulate our two members who have been newly elevated to the status of elders of the Church of the Ghanaian Community of Chicago. They shall be referred to as Elder Nana Kwaku Duah and Elder Sally Owusu, respectively.” She continued by saying that “Thank you for serving in the house of the Lord. God bless and grant you wisdom to lead and serve His flock.

Reverend Kwasi Amponsah-Yeboah wrote, “ This is how Peace reign, victory will be our portion.”

Elder Betty Agyeman wrote “CONGRATS Nana Kwaku Dua and Sister Sally Owusu. Welcome aboard to the service of God.”

From Ghana, a member of the Church, Emma Dennis, wrote, “ Congratulations to our newly elected Elders. May God grant you His Peace, wisdom, and understanding in the Lord’s Vineyard. Amen”

In a congratulatory message, President of the Ghana National Council, GNC, Paa Kwasi Sam, said, “ The Church of the Ghanaian Community was the first Church established by the Ghanaian immigrant community in Chicago to serve the spiritual needs of the then growing young community . It has served the Ghana National Council, the Ghanaian Community at large and dignitaries from Ghana by hosting important events at their church premises. On behalf of my executives, the GNC, and the Community, I congratulate Elders Nana Kwaku Duah and Sally Owusu. I pray that they continue to work hard to make the COGCC achieve its mission and goals.” Paa Kwasi concluded by saying that “ The GNC will continue to work closely with the COGCC as it has done in the past.”

In another development, members of the church voted overwhelmingly to recognize Rev. Dr. Kofi Noonoo, President of the Ghana Council of Churches here in Chicago, Rev Dr. Isaac Paintsil and Dr. Gabriel Amoateng-Boahen for the exceptional roles they played in helping to restore peace and tranquility in the church.
