Minister-Designate for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has vowed to tackle unprofessional conduct, including extortion and brutality, among Ghana’s police officers. Appearing before the Appointment Committee on Friday, January 24, 2025, Muntaka acknowledged that the unscrupulous behavior of some police officers, such as taking bribes from drivers and motorists, has eroded confidence in Ghana’s law enforcement agencies.

To address these issues, Muntaka proposed a significant reform: mandating police officers to wear body cameras at all times while on duty. This measure, he believes, will ensure police professionalism and transparency. “We will ensure that if you are a police officer and you have to step out, then you have your body camera on to take away all the ambiguity and the troubles,” Muntaka explained.

The use of body cameras, Muntaka argued, will provide a clear record of police interactions with the public, helping to prevent misconduct and promote accountability. “When you put the body camera on, everywhere you are, you are being recorded,” he emphasized. “So that when you are on the road extorting money and brutalizing others, it will show and record whatever the police officer is doing.”

Muntaka expressed confidence in his ability to reform the police force and restore public trust. His proposal to mandate body cameras is seen as a significant step towards achieving this goal. As Minister-Designate for the Interior, Muntaka is poised to make a positive impact on Ghana’s law enforcement agencies and promote a safer, more just society for all citizens.
