Bernard Mornah, presidential hopeful of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has announced plans to petition the Supreme Court after an Accra High Court dismissed his suit challenging the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify him from the 2024 presidential polls.
Speaking to the media on Monday, October 21, 2024, Mornah expressed confidence in the validity of his claims, emphasizing the need for a higher court to review the case. He argued that the Electoral Commission made mistakes on their forms, which were not addressed by the judge ¹.
“The EC made mistakes on their forms, and we’re not allowed to make mistakes. The judge didn’t look at that, and that defies ordinary thinking,” Mornah stated. He questioned the nature of the errors cited by the Electoral Commission, asking whether they were data entry or composition errors.
Mornah has already instructed his lawyers to prepare for an appeal, citing that the case is far from over. His legal team will quickly study the case to proceed to the Supreme Court.
This development follows the Electoral Commission’s disqualification of Mornah and ten other presidential candidates. The move has sparked controversy, with Mornah determined to clear his name and contest the presidential election.
In Ghana’s 2020 presidential election, the Electoral Commission’s decision was challenged by the opposition candidate, John Mahama, but was unanimously dismissed by the Supreme Court for lack of merit ¹. It remains to be seen how Mornah’s petition will fare.
