The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, received a report on private sector participation in the power distribution sector. This report, compiled by a committee established in January 2025, aims to guide the government’s policies and strategies in the energy sector.

The report highlights three options for private sector involvement: Entity Concession, Multiple Lease, and Service Franchise. These options have the potential to increase efficiency, improve customer service, and mobilize investment to modernize infrastructure and technology.

Mr. Jinapor expressed his appreciation for the committee’s work and emphasized the government’s commitment to creating an environment for private investment in the power sector. He noted that addressing inefficiencies and enhancing energy distribution remain priorities to meet the demand for electricity.

The report stresses the need for frameworks that support private sector engagement while ensuring consumer protection and pricing mechanisms. It also suggests that partnerships between government and private entities can leverage technologies and practices, potentially transforming the sector.

Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed that the government will not sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo). Instead, the government is committed to transparency and fairness, with an emphasis on local content participation in shaping the energy sector.
