The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and New Media Association have issued a joint statement condemning the growing trend of unethical media practices in Ghana. The statement emphasizes the importance of responsible journalism and adherence to professional codes of conduct.
The coalition expresses concern over comments and pronouncements that have the potential to undermine Ghana’s peace and stability, and negatively impact media freedoms and freedom of expression. They stress that being critical and holding leaders accountable should not be conflated with hate speech and insulting personalities.
The statement specifically condemns the recent comments made by Blessed Godsbrain Smart, aka ‘Captain Smart’, on Accra-based Onua TV, describing people who would vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as ‘beasts’. The coalition calls on the Board and Management of Media General to take immediate action to sanction Mr. Smart, emphasizing that this will serve as a deterrent to others and enhance public confidence in the media organization.
The coalition reminds journalists, media practitioners, and media organizations that the defense of media freedoms is dependent on their professional and responsible conduct. They urge all to conform to the laws of the country and the ethics of their profession, ensuring that their reportage and utterances do not plunge the country into chaos.
The statement concludes by cautioning all journalists, media practitioners, and media organizations to be sensitive to the charged political atmosphere and to avoid incitement that could lead to violence. The coalition reiterates its commitment to defending media freedom while championing media professionalism.
