President-elect John Dramani Mahama recently met with the leadership of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches Council (GPCC) to express his heartfelt gratitude for their support and prayers during the election. Mahama’s meeting with the GPCC leadership was an opportunity for him to acknowledge the significant role the council and its congregations played in his resounding victory.
The GPCC had earlier cautioned against voting along religious lines, emphasizing that the election was not a religious contest. Despite this, the council’s support for Mahama was evident, and he was grateful for their endorsement.
Mahama’s appreciation for the GPCC’s support is a testament to the significant influence of religious groups in Ghana’s democratic processes. As noted by political scientist Thomas Prehi Botchway, religion has played a crucial role in Ghana’s elections since the country’s return to constitutional rule in 1992.
