Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama recently visited his “brother and friend,” President William Ruto of Kenya, to express gratitude for Ruto’s unwavering support. Mahama also invited Ruto to his inauguration on January 7, marking a significant step towards strengthening Kenya-Ghana relations.
Their meeting was an opportunity for fruitful discussions on regional integration, continental security, and enhancing the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). As a former AU high-level committee on Trade Chair, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to expanding trade among African countries under the AfCFTA framework.
The two nations have a long history of cooperation, dating back to the pre-colonial era when Ghana’s First President Kwame Nkrumah and Kenya’s founding father President Jomo Kenyatta worked together to fight colonialism. Mahama’s visit underscores his dedication to fostering stronger ties between African nations and promoting regional integration, a promising sign for the continent’s future.
