Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has been appointed as the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in the 9th Parliament. This appointment, announced by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) on January 23, 2025, marks a new chapter in Ayariga’s career.
Ayariga succeeds Cassiel Ato Forson, who has taken on the role of Minister of Finance. In his acceptance speech, Ayariga emphasized the importance of unity, inclusivity, and accountability, acknowledging the challenges ahead for the Mahama administration. He expressed confidence in the ability of the NDC caucus, backed by President John Dramani Mahama and its 187 MPs, to deliver on their promises and Ghana.
The appointment of Ayariga is seen as a move, given his experience in various positions, including Deputy Minister of State and Minister of State. His beginnings as a student leader and Assemblyman in the Bawku Municipality have equipped him with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead the parliamentary majority in Ghana.
Other appointments include Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan as Deputy Majority Leader, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor as Majority Chief Whip, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah as First Deputy Whip, and Richard Acheampong as Second Deputy Majority Whip. These appointments are expected to bolster the NDC’s efforts to deliver on their campaign promises and build Ghana.
