As a cholera outbreak spreads across Lagos state, Comfort Ajayi, a mother of three, is taking no chances. She’s educating herself and her family on hygiene and prevention measures to stay safe. Health authorities declared an outbreak on June 15, 2024, with 436 suspected cases reported. With support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners, Nigerian health authorities are working to halt community transmission through public health education, epidemiological interventions, and sanitation efforts.
WHO field volunteers and local government facilitators are deployed to hotspots, providing orientation training, mentoring, and strengthening surveillance and case management. Over 350 field volunteers are conducting public health education and active case finding in health facilities and communities. Essential emergency cholera kits are also being provided to treat affected individuals.
Comfort and her community are grateful for the support, acknowledging the importance of proper hygiene and sanitation in preventing the spread of cholera. With a concerted effort from health authorities, partners, and the community, they hope to contain the outbreak and ensure a safer future for all.
