Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, founded in 1923 as a cornerstone of Ghana’s medical excellence, now stands as a sobering contradiction. Once revered as a beacon of healing and national pride, it has deteriorated into a haunting symbol of institutional neglect. This is no longer a matter of routine maintenance, it is a humanitarian crisis unfolding in plain sight.

Across its sprawling campus, the hospital’s buildings, meant to inspire confidence, now evoke despair. The facades are stained and peeling, revealing decades of abandonment. Inside, the situation is even more alarming. Plumbing and sewage systems have collapsed, leaving stagnant pools of foul water and a stench that clings to the air. These conditions are not merely unsanitary, they are dangerous. They threaten the very lives of patients and healthcare workers alike.

Lighting is dim and inadequate, casting shadows over surgical wards, maternity blocks, and children’s units. The story is tragically uniform: spaces meant for healing have become hazards. How can Ghana expect its medical professionals to perform life-saving work in environments that actively endanger life?

This is not just a failure of infrastructure,it is a failure of leadership. The continued operation of Korle Bu in its current state is a betrayal of public trust and a dishonor to the legacy of its founders. Piecemeal repairs and cosmetic gestures will no longer suffice. The time has come for decisive, radical action.

The only responsible path forward is a full-scale shutdown of the current facility, followed by a comprehensive rebuilding effort. This must be executed with precision and compassion, ensuring the safe relocation of patients and staff to alternative hospitals or temporary medical centers. Regional and district facilities must be mobilized to absorb the transition.

But rebuilding Korle Bu must go beyond bricks and mortar. Ghana must envision an ultra-modern hospital complex, one that reflects its role as a leading referral center in Africa. This new institution must be equipped with advanced medical technologies, robust sanitation systems, and a design that fosters healing, dignity, and efficiency.

The Mahama administration now stands at a crossroads. To confront this challenge head-on would be to write a legacy of courage and compassion. It would signal a commitment to the health and dignity of every Ghanaian, transcending political cycles and partisan rhetoric.

Korle Bu’s current condition is a stain on our national conscience. The patients cannot wait. The professionals cannot endure. The nation cannot afford silence. It is time to act.
