Edgar Wiredu, an insurance marketer, has sounded the alarm on the excessively long duration of court cases in Ghana, highlighting the devastating impact this has on justice in the legal system. In a recent interview on GTV’s breakfast show, Wiredu emphasized that many legal matters should not drag on for years, arguing that such delays are unjust and unnecessary.

Mr. Wiredu’s concerns were sparked by the recent withdrawal of charges against Dr. Opuni and Seidu Agongo, which has reignited discussions about the efficiency of Ghana’s judicial process. He criticized outdated practices within the legal system, stressing that these traditional approaches must be reformed to foster progress and enhance public confidence.

“I don’t believe in the notion that justice should be delayed,” Wiredu stated. “If we want to move forward as a country, we must put an end to certain traditional issues that are holding us back.”

Mr. Wiredu also argued that lengthy legal processes are particularly unjust for innocent individuals who find themselves caught in a system that seems to waste their time. To address this, he proposed implementing a maximum timeline for resolving specific types of cases, suggesting a nine-month cap as a reasonable target.

“Why should some people be subjected to years of uncertainty?” Wiredu asked. “Someone who is innocent should not have their life put on hold while the court system drags on.”
