The Ghana Police Service has issued a directive to the protest organizers. The Accra Regional Commander, DCOP Arhin Kwasi Annor, has instructed that the demonstration scheduled for 25th May 2024 should not take place at the Jubilee House, which is a designated security zone, but rather at Independence Square.
The decision was communicated through a letter dated 15thMay 2024, following discussions held at the Regional Police Headquarters in Accra. The letter highlighted concerns that the protest at Revolution Square, located opposite the Jubilee House, could potentially “endanger public defense, public order, and violate the rights and freedom of other persons.”
Citing security risks and the potential for violence, the police have deemed the proposed end time of the protest at 12 midnight as unsafe. To ensure public safety and the smooth operation of essential services, the police have requested the relocation of the picketing to Independence Square.
The Ghana Police Service has reassured the #DumsorMustStop conveners of their ongoing commitment to maintaining law and order during the public protest, within the confines of their mandate. The move to Independence Square is seen as a measure to balance the right to protest with the need to uphold public safety and security.
