Former President John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 campaign tours across the 16 regions in Ghana, outlined several key policies. Here are some of the notable policies:
24-Hour Economy Strategy: Mahama proposed implementing a 24-hour economy strategy with three shifts of eight hours each. The goal is to maximize productivity and efficiency, transform Ghana into an import substitution and export-led economy, enhance access to public services, and create more well-paying jobs for unemployed Ghanaians.
Banking Sector Reform: Mahama aims to reform the Bank of Ghana and rejuvenate the almost collapsed banking and financial sector. He also plans to give opportunities for experienced banking professionals who were laid off to secure their careers once more.
Local Participation and Job Creation: The NDC’s policy emphasizes local participation in various sectors, including banking, financial services, telecommunications, mining, oil and gas, agriculture, manufacturing, and construction. The goal is to generate more jobs for the youth by actively attracting viable private sector investors.
Debt Management and Project Completion: Mahama intends to set a standardized limit for borrowing to prevent a debt crisis. Additionally, he plans to complete abandoned and ongoing projects instead of rushing to start new ones. An inventory of stalled or abandoned hospitals, schools, electrification, water, and road projects will be carried out, with annual budgetary allocations for their completion.
Governance Advisory Council: Mahama proposes establishing a Governance Advisory Council comprising representatives from Civil Society Organizations, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and ordinary Ghanaians. This council will help improve political governance, curb corruption, and ensure respect for human rights. It will release an annual “State of Governance in Ghana” report.
Efficient Government: Mahama aims to run the leanest but most efficient government under the fourth republic by appointing not more than 60 ministers and deputy ministers. Certain Ministries will be combined, and duplicative government agencies will be eliminated. Ex-gratia payments will also be abolished to cut down on government expenditure.
These policies reflect Mahama’s vision for Ghana, emphasizing economic growth, job creation, infrastructure development, and good governance. His previous policy achievements include significant investments in infrastructure, transportation, energy, education, and hydroelectric power projects.
